Answers to Numerical Problems

Preface

Physical pharmacy is concerned with the fundamental physical and chemical properties of matter or substance. The knowledge on these principles is necessary to the pharmacist primarily engaged in the manufacture of formulations. Hence the topics that are of interest to pharmacy are selected. Some topics are reasonably brief and others are purposely omitted, thus the book is titled as Essentials of Physical Pharmacy.

Over the years, the students of pharmacy have been feeling the need for a simple textbook to meet their goals. An attempt is made to achieve this objective in the book in your hand. This subject is a first level course and students are exposed for the first time to the professional aspects, in addition to their usual problem of change of medium of instructions. In these circumstances the present book becomes handy and self-learning material.

The book consists of 22 chapters, namely chemical bond, intermolecular forces, gaseous state, liquid state, solid state, phase rule-phase equilibria, thermodynamics and thermochemistry, physical properties of drug molecules, solubility (nonelectrolytes, electrolytes, gases in liquids, liquids in liquids and solids in liquids), theories of acids and bases-ionic equilibria, pH, buffers, isotonic buffer solutions, salt hydrolysis, distribution law and electrochemistry.

Special emphasis has been given to the following aspects :
1. Applications of principles.
2. Numerical problems (unsolved and solved).
3. A number of illustrations.
4. Usage of SI (systeme internationale) system.
5. Question bank.

This book will also serve as a ready reference for the industrial pharmacist also.

Suggestions and criticism from teachers and students are welcome.
