About the Book

Sri Lanka's English writers have reached particularly in the field of poetry a degree of achievement, which compares favourably in quality with good poetry in English or in any language anywhere. This Anthology seeks to capture this achievement.

The Poems offer a remarkable variety of themes, moods, feelings and artistic modes, ranging from pungent satire on society to tender love lyrics, from personal concerns to the general and vital issues of our time. The poetry also mirrors the changing society of a developing country after political independence.

The editor contributes a perceptive and substantial Introduction, which informs the reader of the salient factors affecting the historical background of the poets, discusses crucial issues relevant to poetry in English of the whole Commonwealth and provides critical guidance to the appreciation of the poetry.

The Book contains a Glossary.
