Preface

With this 20th edition, the book completes 39 years of it's existence, which by itself is a great achievement and a milestone in the history of a book. It has given me great encouragement to still better the contents of my book. With this 20th edition, I go down the memory lane and remember the launch of the first edition and my husband Dr. J.E. Park, the author of the first edition. The way he used to take pains collecting latest material, day in and day out, for the betterment of the book was exemplary. I take this opportunity to salute him for all his achievements. I took the responsibility of nurturing this plant from the thirteenth edition and 1 am happy for the encouragement I got from medical and allied fraternity.

To match the pace of this fast changing subject, the whole book has been updated thoroughly. New matter on adverse events following immunization, and epidemiological investigations following these events are discussed in detail in chapter 3. A new chapter has been added on "Essential Medicines and Counterfeit Medicines", as per request from several professionals. All the communicable diseases have been updated thoroughly, especially the latest guidelines of WHO for ART and the syndromic management of STD. Data from National Family Health Survey-3 has been incorporated as required. Chapter on "Medicine and Social Sciences" now contains new topic of "Wealth Index" and "Reproductive Health and Poverty Reduction". Chapter on "Preventive Medicine in Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Geriatrics" contains new matter on IMNCI, girl child and gender bias, National Plan of Action for Children 2005 and adolescent health. Chapter 22 contains new matter on Indian Public Health Standards for primary health centres, sub-centres and revised standards for community health centres. A list of abbreviations has been added at the end of the book.

I hope this book will continue to serve not only the medical students for whom it is intended, but also those in allied profession.

I extend my appreciation to Mr. Brij Mohan Bhanot for the great care bestowed in publishing this book.
