About The Book

Prajnadhara : Essays on Asian Art, History, Epigraphy and Culture is a collection of fifty-one Research papers in Honour of Dr. Gouriswar Bhattacharya, contributed by authors from India and abroad who acknowledge the eminent scholar of Bengal origin as a stalwart on every aspect of Indian Art and Indological studies.

Bound in two volumes, these articles with notes, references and bibliographies, are well Illustrated and cover a wide range of Topics relating to Indian, Tibetan, Southeast Asian and Central Asian art, architecture, iconography, painting, epigraphy, numismatics, religion, Heritage management and photography.

The papers are grouped into seven sections according to distinct geographical regions, viz. Section I : Gandhara; Section II : Northern India, Central India, Nepal; Section III : Western India; Section IV : Southern India; Section V : Eastern India and Bangladesh; Section VI : Pan-Indian Issues; and Section VII : Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Tibet.


About the Author

Gerd J.R. Mevissen, born 1953, studied Modern Architecture and Ancient Indian Art History at Berlin Universities. He worked from 1990 to 1995 as Lecturer of Indian Art History in the Institute of Indian Philology and Art History at the Free University Berlin, and from 2000 to 2002 as Assistant Curator at the Museum of Indian Art, Berlin. He is Editor of the journals Berliner Indologische Studien and Indo-Asiatische Zeitschrift, both published annually from Berlin, and has edited also a number of Books and felicitation volumes dealing with Indological subjects. He has published more than forty Research papers on different aspects of Indian Art, Architecture and Iconography (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain).

Dr. Arundhati Banerji, b.1952, as Superintending Archaeologist (Publication) in the ASI, is engaged in the editorial work of books being brought out by the ASI. She authored two books : Images, Attributes and Motifs - Studies in Early Indian Art and Numismatics and Early Indian Terracotta Art; edited Harismriti (Papers presented in Memory of Shri H. Sarkar) and Kala-darpana : The Mirror of Indian Art (Papers presented in memory of Shri Krishna Deva) and contributed over seventy papers on art, iconography and numismatics in a number of Indian and foreign Journals, Bulletins and publications brought out on special occasions. Awarded a fellowship to Study the Terracotta collections in the Museums in UK, she was invited to the international conferences/seminars at Kathmandu, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Italy where she presented papers on various aspects of Terracotta Art and Buddhist Iconography. In connection with her study and research in the various museums/libraries and similar other research Institutions she also visited Paris, Berlin and Rome.
