3. How To Cast a Horoscope
4. Planetary Longitudes or Ephemeris for 2000 to 2050
Roman's New Millennium Fifty Year (2001-2050) Ephemeris is in response to the requests of countless readers of THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE for data covering the first fifty years of the new millennium. The idea for such an Ephemeris had taken shape even during the lifetime of our revered Founder Editor DR. B. V. RAMAN but its implementation and work on it were put off for one reason or the other.
DR. RAMAN was very particular about the correctness of a chart and he always insisted one should ensure a horoscope was correctly cast before venturing on an analysis. Computers fulfil this task admirably but they are beyond the reach of the common man in our country. Astrology in India is treated with reverence as a divine subject and to most practitioners and students of Jyotisha, every step involved in it is an act of devout worship. Therefore, there is really no grudging the labour involved in casting a horoscope manually for most people in India even in this age of computers and speed.
Roman's New Millennium Fifty Year Ephemeris covers a period of 50 years from January 2001 to December 2050. The ephemeris for the year 2000, also included for ready reference here, is a bonus to users of the Ephemeris. This volume may be treated as a sequel to Roman's 110 Year Empheris which covers the period 1891 to 2000 and therefore of great utility in casting the birth horoscopes of almost anyone who is alive today.
A major departure from Roman's 110 Year Ephemeris (which is based on Sayana positions) is made here in that Roman's New Millennium Fifty Year Ephemeris carries the Nirayana positions of planets. Jyotisha or Hindu astrology, now increasingly known as Vedic astrology in the West, is gaining greater and greater acceptance all round the globe for its distinctly superior merits of accuracy in prediction based on the Nirayana chart. This spread of Jyotisha and its increasing popularity around the globe is largely attributable to the tireless work of DR. B. V. RAMAN for over 6 decades.
Roman's New Millennium Fifty Year Ephemeris carries daily positions of planets. It can be used universally. The planetary positions being Nirayana or Sidereal, the corresponding Sayana or Tropical positions can be obtained by adding Raman Ayanamsa for the month and year in question. The data in these pages can also be used not only for casting horoscopes according to Nirayana system but also for finding the Tithi (lunar day), the Nakshatra (constellation) and the Yoga which are important elements in Jyotisha, especially in Muhurtha or electional astrology.
A copy of Raman's New Millennium Fifty Year Ephemeris, A Manual of Hindu Astrology and Nirayana Tables of Houses carry all the data and information needed to correctly cast a horoscrope for any date between January 2000 and December 2050.
One can also cast a horoscope without the Nirayana Tables of Houses using only the Raman's New Millennium Fifty Year Ephemeris and Table III given in it covering the Ascendant and the Tenth House for 10 degree intervals of latitude and 16 minute intervals of Sidereal Time.
The longitudes cover the Navagrahas - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu - as also the so called trans-Saturnine planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto discovered by modern astronomers. Hindu astrology does not take congizance of these three planets. Nevertheless, their positions have been furnished for those interested in experimenting and research.
No separate Tables of retrogression are given as the positions are given on a daily basis with marking the change of motion to retrogression of the planet on the date against it.
Raman's New Millennium Fifty Year Ephemeris is our first major step in our crusade for astrology after the passing away of DR. B. V. RAMAN. We believe it will fulfil the needs of all students and practitioners of astrology making available to them Nirayana planetary positions for the first 50 years of the 21st century.
Roman's New Millennium fifty Year Ephemeris carries data for which no originality can be claimed. The computation of planetary longitudes is gratefully acknowledged to Mr. William Levacy and the Educational Sciences Corporation of America, a team of qualified professionals with many years experience in the fields of aerospace, computer science, physics, humanities and Jyotisha or Vedic astrology and who use the most advanced techniques of artificial intelligence, expert systems and high level computer programming languages to research and develop Jyotisha based data.
I must record my special appreciation to Mr. William Levacy for his prompt response to our request for the data. Although it was readied by him immediately in record time, various pre-occupations related to editorial and organisational work delayed making it available to our readers.
Examples have been worked out to facilitate easy understanding and application of the data in these pages. I must express my thankfulness to Mr. V. S. Kalyanaraman and other friends who have assisted me at different stages in the compilation and completion of this volume. I also extend my appreciation to Mr. B. Niranjan Babu, CEO and Publisher, THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE, for the elegant production of the Ephemeris. I also thank Mr. Sanjeeva Rao and Mr. M. Jagadeesha who have helped me in the proofreading and other stages in the production of this volume.
Our grateful thanks extend also to UBS Publishers' Distributors Ltd., Mr. C. . Chawla, Mr. Vivek Ahuja and Mr. Balram Sadhwani for their continuing cooperation and support to our work and for having came forward to publish Roman's New Millennium Fifty Year Ephemeris helping us make it available to countless astrology lovers everywhere.
It is hoped our efforts in bringing out this Ephemeris will contribute to the growing momentum of the wave of Jyotisha started by the revered DR. B. V. RAMAN.

Dr. B V. Raman (1912-1998), Dr. Raman dedicated his whole life to the cause of jyotisha or astrology or the study of relations between cosmic and terrestrial phenomena. He was able to demonstrate by his writings and predictions made through The Astrological Magazine and other media that the astrological theory of cosmic influences affecting human life is essentially correct. He authored more than 40 titles covering various aspects of jyotisha-Hindu astronomy, astro-psychology, weather and political forecasts, disease diagnosis, natural calamities, disaster management, etc. He travelled round the world several times addressing universities, medical associations, educational and cultural institutions on different aspects of astrology and the immense potential of the science in finding solutions to different ills facing mankind.
Dr. Raman was the first to deliver a lecture'Relevance of Astrology in Modern Times' in 1970 at the United Nations, New York, which evoked much interest in diplomatic circles. Dr. Raman restarted THE ASTROLOGICAL MAGAZINE in 1936, editing it for over 6 decades and working to create intelligent interest in astrology as a subject of academic pursuit the world over. Raman's New Millennium 50 Year Ephemeris (2001-2050 AD) is a sequel to Raman's 110 Year Ephemeris (1890-2000)
