About The Book

The Ramayana has been studies up till now focusing mainly on its literary aspect. Works on the Ramayana in Art are not many. This Study has remained incomplete due to non-utilization of the regional Ramayana texts, in understanding the depiction and the regional variations. Ramayana in Indian Art and Epigraphy is an attempt in this direction, as the study is based on the data of the regional Ramayanas, including Folk themes in Tamil, Kannada and Telugu and epigraphs. The Ramayana panels found in the Temples of Andhra Pradesh are studied in detail taking the Valmiki Ramayana and its Dravidian versions into consideration in order to understand the impact of literature on the narration of the scenes of this great epic through the lithic medium, which has its own limitations like space. The method of depiction of the panels is also discussed.

Profusely Illustrated and with Commentary on plates, this study will be a reference work to all those in Indian Art and Culture.
