About the Book

Franz Mehring was a German Revolutionary Marxist, a philosopher, a writer and one of the leaders of the left-wing factions Of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). Initially a liberal democrat he become a Marxist in the 1880's and joined the SPD in 1891. He was the editor of SPDs theoretical organ Die Neue Zeit. Along with Luxemburg he founded the Spartakusbunda and become a leading member of the Independent Social Democratic Party on its inception in 1917.

Mehring's principal contribution to Marxism was in the areas of History and literature. His History of German Social Democracy (1897-98) made a broad survey of the political, social and intellectual developments in Germany in the nineteenth century. His Biography on Karl Marx was his most distinctive contribution. In this he attempted a full scale and an objective defense of the writings of Lassalle and Bernstein. This was in itself a noteworthy point for Revisionism was not received sympathetically among the Radicals and left-wing scholars. His Die Lessing Legende (1893) established the Marxist Sociology of literature and of intellectual history.

Mehring was opposed to mechanistic materialism, economic materialism, irrationalism, neo-Kantianism, Revisionism and the principle of 'Arts for Arts sake'. He held that morality was not neutral but was in fact conditioned by the social Environment especially in the interests of the ruling class.

The present Book contains the original writings of Mehring along with an introduction, biographical sketch and a bibliography.
