About the Book

One of the classics of imaginative literature and the best-selling books of all time, She, subtitled A History of Adventure by Henry Rider Haggard is the story of adventure and suspense set in a lost African kingdom ruled by a fearsome and mysterious white queen, Ayesha, who reigns as the all-powerful "She" or " She-who-must-be-obeyed". The white queen Ayesha is a permanent feature of the human imagination. The novel starts with the Cambridge University professor, Horace Holly, who receives a visitor, Vincey, who tells that he will soon die and provides him with a manuscript and a locked iron box embracing a Sherd of Amenartas. He instructs that the box not to be opened until Leo turn 25. He also charges Holly with the task of raising his son Leo Vincey and secures his family secrets. When the chest is unlocked on the 25th birthday of Leo, they found a sherd with instructions written on it that leads Mr. Holly, Leo and his servant to travel to Eastern Africa but encounters a storm, which wrecks their ship.

The novel is positioned firmly in the imperialist literature of 19th century England because it shows the travels of British explorers in South Africa. One of the most fundamental works of fantasy literature, She was first published as a Graphic serial in London, between October 1886 and January 1887. It received equal criticism and admiration for its depiction of female authority and feminine behavior.
