About The Book
The work aims at providing a systematic arranged information of the various offices along with the assignments of jagirs and grant of titles, honours conferred upon nobles covering the period 1764 to 1858 v.s. in Marwar.
The Sense of systematization is precipitated in the development of jagirs in the form of land revenue assignments. These jagirs are the only reliable index of the size and composition of the ruling class as no viable alternative is left which can, safely, be relied upon.
The jagirs coupled with the position of the possessor in the social milieu were a pointer to the status of an individual and as such a scramble for it was witnessed. They denote not only the power and influence of an individual but also of Families and factions too, apart from the division of the revenue of the state to a microscopic Minority and the consequent burden under which the raj reeled.
The chronological list is reign-wise giving a coherent account of a noble with his titles and honours from its earliest enrolment in the state Apparatus till his last bearing barring such gaps for which archival records are unavailable. Comprehensive Career of a noble may thus be reconstructed by using cross-references.
The present work aims at providing systematically arranged information about assignments, appointments to offices and conferment of honours upon pattayats from 1764- 1858 v.s.
The, then, Raj of Marwar possessed a well-knit bureaucratic apparatus revolving round the assignment of jagirs with no numerical rank as was the practice with the Mughals. The jagirs made no change in the composition of the nobility, as by virtue of noble's kinship with the ruler and his claims to territory, the jagirs in theory were held permanently and hereditary unless otherwise. This made much of the Political life of the Raj centered around its assignments. Such assignments are crucially important for a Study of the History of the Raj. They indicate not only the impact of individuals but also of families and factions as well as clan-groups. It again is a pointer to the Financial Health of the Raj, as the assignment of jagirs reflected the total amount of pay claims vis-a-vis the revenue resources.
The chronological list of jagirs, offices and honours along with promotion or Reduction bears Cross - references to other entries. It is reign-wise in Vikram Samvat. The career of a noble can thus be re-constructed by tracing the entries forwards and backwards.
The lists are preceded by an introduction which provides an exposition of the jagir system clan-wise (main khamps) along with its analysis.
