About the Book

The subject, Electrical Design Estimating and Costing covers an important functional area of an electrical diploma holder. The subject is taught in various forms in different states. In some states, it is covered under two subjects, namely, Electrical Design & Drawing and Electrical Estimating & Costing. In some states it is taught as an integrated subject but is split into two or three parts to be taught in different semesters. To cater to the needs of polytechnics of different states, the content of the course has been developed by consulting the curricula of various State Boards of Technical Education in the country. In addition to inclusion of conventional topics, a Chapter on Motor Control Circuits has been included in this book. This topic is of direct relevance to the needs of industries and, as such, finds prominent place in the curricula of most of the states of India. The Book covers topics like symbols and standards, design of light and fan circuits, alarm circuits, panel boards etc. Design of Electrical Installations for residential and commercial buildings as well as small industries has been dealt with in detail. In addition, Design of Overhead and Underground Transmission and Distribution lines, Sub-stations and Design of Illumination schemes have also been included. The book contains a chapter on Motor Circuit Design and a chapter on Design of Small Transformers and Chokes. The book contains theoretical explanations wherever required. A large number of solved examples have been given to help students understand the subject better. The authors have built up the course from simple to complex and from known to unknown. Examples have generally been taken from practical situations. Indeed, students will find this book useful not only for passing examinations but even more during their professional career.

About the Author

K.B. Raina is presently the Principal of Technical Teachers Training Institute, Chandigarh. He holds a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Bristol, U.K. Professor Raina joined Technical Teachers Training Institute, Chandigarh in 1970 as Professor of Electrical Engineering. Earlier he had worked as engineer and manager in the industry in India and in U.K. He has been in technical education administration and Management for many years. At Technical Teachers Training Institute, Chandigarh, Professor Raina has made major contribution in the fields of Curriculum Development, technical teacher training and development of teaching-learning materials. He has written text books on "Transmission & Distribution of Electrical Power and Electrical Engineering Materials. In addition, he has developed instructional materials in a number of topics/subjects in both print and non-print form. He has written a large number of technical papers. Professor Raina is Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).

S.K. Bhattacharya is Professor and Head of Electrical Engineering Department at Technical Teachers Training Institute, Chandigarh. He holds a BE degree from Jadavpur University and an ME degree from Bengal Engineering College, Howrah. He had his practical training in an electricity board and a transformer factory in the Netherlands. He was exposed to Curriculum Development and technical teacher training in Huddersfield, England. He went to England on a Commonwealth Education Fellowship to attend a course on Educational Technology. Professor Bhattacharya joined the Technical Teachers Training Institute, Chandigarh in 1969. He has developed a number of laboratory manuals, monographs, teaching aids, demonstration models and has written a number of technical papers. He has authored a text book on Electrical Machines and co-authored a text book on Electrical Engineering Materials. Professor Bhattacharya is a Fellow of The Institution of Engineers (India).
