The Construction activities have lately increased manifold. The innovations in construction technologies, designers' desires to design stylish buildings and need to design complex structures have further enhanced the importance of geotechnical investigations. The methods of geotechnical investigations are available in various codes of practice. Thus, the information is in scattered form and not available at one place. The present book is an effort to compile all the important geotechnical tests in one single volume. This edition of the book is the third, revised, enlarged and international edition, which covers all relevant field tests, laboratory tests including chemical tests of soils. Preliminary idea of Rock drilling is also discussed in the book. A few case studies have also been added in order to acquaint the readers more precisely about applications of geotechnical tests in design of foundations. The tests described in the book are based on internationally prevailing methodologies as well as authors' long Experiences in this area. This book will truly prove a valuable handbook of geotechnical investigations and their use in design of foundations.

University of Roorkeeis in the faculty of University of Roorkee since 1983, where he is engaged in teaching, Research and consultancy. In his brief spell of service in Iraq, he designed foundations for Water Supply Project, Radio stations etc. He has been associated with many Soil testing jobs including foundation designs for refinery projects, Sugar mills, overhead tanks and building projects. Dr. Mittal has organised many training programmes on geotechnical investigations, foundation designs and also hydro electric power houses designs for service engineers. Widely travelled abroad including United Kingdom, U.S.A., Japan, Bangladesh etc. in connection with his Professional engagements, Dr. Mittal has to his Credit more than 100 Technical reports including that of soil exploration work, besides a book on Pile foundation designs and construction. He has been involved in design pf more than 50 hydro electric projects in the country.

Jagdish Prasad Shukla served U.R Irrigation Research Institute, Roorkee for 35 years where he had been involved in many prestigious projects for geotechnical investigations. He was associated with soil exploration works of Rihand dam ; Maneri Bhali dam ; Ganga barrage Kanpur; Taj barrage Agra ; Kishan dam ; Bhimgoda head works Haridwar; renovation of famous Shri Badrinath Temple etc. besides upcoming Tehri dam project. He had been involved in preparation of various Indian Standards Codes related to geotechnical engineering. He has to his credit more than 400 soil exploration reports, besides many other technical publications. Presently he is actively engaged in soil testing, Rock testing and rock drilling activities.
