About the Author

Born in Allahabad to Vijaylakshmi and Ranjit Pandit, Nayantara Sahgal was the second of their three daughters. Niece to Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India's first prime minister, she was at a young age exposed to the idealism and the determination that marked the country's struggle for freedom. She received her education at Woodstock, an American missionary school in Mussoorie, and Wellsley College, Massachusetts. She has published numerous articles, two autobiographies and eight novels, the latest being Mistaken Identity. Sahgal's lasting contribution is the historical perspective she has presented in her political novels. She has received several prestigious awards including the Sinclair Fiction Prize, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Eurasia).

In her novels Nayantara Sahgal has drawn on a rich personal heritage and on her active career as a journalist-observer of Indian politics. She has been especially sensitive to the condition of Indian women emerging from a rigidly confining social structure into a modern society. Her novels cover the span of twentieth century Indian history from the eve of World War I through the declining days of British imperial rule, into the stormy early years of independence and partition of 1947 and the struggle, in the last quarter of the century, to preserve democracy under the threats of autocracy and bitter religious and ethnic conflicts.
