The Book seeks to provide a research perspective to the Sustainable Development of the Indian arid zone through eight sections covering thirty nine chapters, each written by a leading expert having a long standing in the arid zone research. The two distinctive features of the Indian arid zone - 'vastness' in terms of land area, human and livestock population, and 'diversity' with regard to physical, environmental and biological resources, require that a reliable and comprehensive inventory of natural resources (landforms, non-saline and saline soils, water and vegetation etc.) be prepared and Management strategies for their sustainable development and also for forest lands, rangelands and livestock, rainfed lands and rainwater, alternate land use systems, energy resources, and yield reducers, be suggested, keeping in view the fragile arid ecosystems in which one has to operate.
In the section on 'Natural Resources Inventory', the climatic features of the Indian arid zone and type of droughts and their impact on agricultural production of these regions have been highlighted. A full chapter on geomorphic features, giving four geomorphic approaches and identifying fourteen land forms, pointing out the potential and limitations of each for development into good agricultural lands, woodlands, grasslands and desert catchments, has been provided. Major soils of arid zone, they're physical and chemical (soil fertility) characteristics, together with their potentialities and limitations, are given in the chapter on soils. A study of surface and ground water resources is important for sustenance of all life (human, livestock, vegetation, and etc.) and, therefore, two chapters are devoted to these aspects. The chapter on vegetation of Indian arid zone gives a glimpse of past and present vegetation and its ecological status. A brief history, type and distribution of the flora available in the arid zone of Rajasthan, under different physiographic settings, are discussed in the chapter on flora of the Indian arid zone. The chapters on economic plants and underexploited tropical plants with economic value, give the prospects and potentialities of each of the species tried so far in the arid zone. Land use and its mapping is yet another aspect of proper and rational management of natural resources and as such it also finds a place in this section.
